A typical construction season brings plenty of concrete work and crack sealing, asphalt paving and parking lot patching.
But this year, Black-Top Paving is positioned to offer even more.
A business unit of Journey Group, Black-Top has expanded its services so it can handle all road surfacing work needed to build out a development.
“It’s proven to be a good strategy, and it’s easier for an owner to work with one contractor,” division leader Ryan Kerkvliet said.
“We’re now working on projects where we’re doing final grading, gravel, curb and gutter, and asphalt paving.”
Black-Top is working on multiple residential developments in Sioux Falls, Hartford and Harrisburg.
“It’s really looking to be a good year,” Kerkvliet said. “There’s a lot of work out there, and we’ve got a lot of work already lined up.”
That includes everything from a new Starbucks in Vermillion to the new Levo Federal Credit Union in southeast Sioux Falls.
Black-Top crews even completed concrete work with Journey as part of enhancing the new black bear exhibit at the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History.
Need repair and maintenance?
Businesses also should take a look at their parking lots, sidewalks and other areas in need of maintenance, Kerkvliet said.
“We do have some capacity yet this year for private parking lot maintenance, and a lot of times we don’t start hearing about it until the weather is warming up,” he said.
“If you’ve got a strip mall or office and need to make some repairs, it’s good to reach out because our estimators can get it on their schedule and provide a plan to complete the work with as little of an impact on your business as possible.”
It’s a good idea to have professionals evaluate concrete and asphalt surfacing every two years and especially if you haven’t done any maintenance in the past five years, he continued.
“If there are new cracks, we can get them sealed to keep moisture from getting in and leading to bigger deterioration,” he said. “And if you have a trip hazard and someone falls, it can be much more costly than the actual cost to maintain the property.”

Now hiring
Much of the Black-Top team is back for the year, but there are still openings for certain positions.
“While we always want to grow our team, we have most of our employees returning from the off-season, which is great,” Kerkvliet said.
“We’re really focused on finding equipment operators and truck drivers – those are areas where we’re short – but the more qualified employees we can find, the more work we can do.”
