McLaury Building - South Dakota School of Mines & Technology

McLaury Building - South Dakota School of Mines & Technology

The South Dakota School of Mines McLaury Building is a 100-year-old education building that was in need of a major remodel to accommodate and upgrade the Mines campus. By remodeling the existing building, it allowed the administration to utilize an iconic building on campus to preserve the historic character of the campus, yet bring it up to current standards.

Ainsworth Benning Construction successfully completed the McLaury remodel project as a phased project in order to make sure the construction was completed during the summer when students are off campus. The main challenges included a short construction period of 3-month to accommodate the semester start date and coordination of 11 subcontractors working in the relatively small space. The project was a complete remodel of the 6,900 square foot first floor and consisted of plumbing and HVAC replacement, new laboratories, reconfiguration of classrooms, and other features.
